India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate Amid Cross-Border Strikes and Nuclear Fears

Conflict Ignites After Kashmir Attack

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following a deadly militant attack in the tourist area of Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. Twenty-six civilians were killed, prompting fierce condemnation from India, which accused Pakistan-based militant groups of orchestrating the assault. In a swift response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 6.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Retaliatory Strikes

In a large-scale military response, India targeted nine suspected terrorist facilities within Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The strikes, carried out with Rafale fighter jets and precision-guided missiles, reportedly killed at least 31 individuals, including senior Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Abdul Rauf Azhar. India described the move as a “preemptive strike to protect national sovereignty.”

Pakistan Responds: Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs

On May 10, Pakistan retaliated with Operation Bunyān al-Marsūs, targeting several Indian military bases in Jammu, Amritsar, and Punjab. Pakistan claimed to have used Fatah missiles and combat drones. While some of the attacks were intercepted by India’s air defense systems, others caused casualties and damage on the ground.

Nuclear Escalation Risks and Global Reactions

Since May 7, over 50 people have died from both sides. Reports of Pakistan convening its National Command Authority—its top nuclear decision-making body—sparked global concern. Though later denied by the defense minister, the reports heightened fears. Nations like the U.S., Turkey, and Saudi Arabia have urged immediate de-escalation.

As the conflict threatens to spiral further, the international community is urging restraint. Amnesty International has called for the protection of civilians. All eyes are now on diplomatic efforts to prevent a larger catastrophe in this historically volatile region.

This round of India-Pakistan conflict goes beyond border skirmishes. With active military engagements and nuclear undertones, it demands urgent global attention and a strong diplomatic push toward peace.
