New COVID-19 Wave Hits Asia, Cases Surge in Hong Kong and Singapore

COVID-19 Spike Returns to Haunt Asia

A sharp rise in COVID-19 cases has been reported in both Hong Kong and Singapore in recent weeks. In Hong Kong, health authorities recorded 31 severe cases in the week ending May 3, 2025—the highest weekly count in a year. Meanwhile, Singapore reported a 28% weekly increase with an estimated 14,200 new infections.

New Variants and Waning Immunity Fuel the Surge

Singapore’s Ministry of Health confirmed that the LF.7 and NB.1.8 variants, both sub-lineages of Omicron’s JN.1, are now dominant. Although not more deadly, these strains spread faster. The surge is also driven by declining immunity from previous vaccinations. Traces of the virus detected in sewage samples further suggest widespread community transmission, with common symptoms including cough, conjunctivitis, and brain fog.

Health Advisory and Preventive Measures

Governments are urging booster shots for vulnerable populations and advising mask usage when symptomatic. Although COVID-19 is now considered endemic, authorities remain alert for possible future waves.
