Trump Launches Self-Deportation Program: A New Strategy to Slash Deportation Costs

Trump’s Latest Immigration Strategy

President Donald Trump has unveiled a bold new immigration policy: a self-deportation program. The initiative offers a $1,000 cash incentive and free airline tickets to undocumented immigrants who voluntarily return to their home countries. This move is intended to reduce the government’s hefty deportation budget.

Up to 70% Cost Savings

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the average cost of forcibly deporting one individual reaches $17,121. Through this voluntary program, the government projects potential savings of up to 70%. Participants can register using the CBP Home app, formerly known as CBP One.

Key Features of the CBP Home App

The app allows users to:

  • Submit intent to return home
  • Schedule and track travel
  • Receive the stipend after verified departure

Moreover, applicants will receive lower enforcement priority during the process, as long as they demonstrate intent to leave.

Despite its efficiency, the program faces criticism. Advocacy groups warn that those who join may face a 10-year re-entry ban if they’ve overstayed for more than a year. They also caution that leaving the U.S. could cancel pending asylum or other legal claims.

Initial Uptake Looks Promising

Early data shows that thousands have started using the app. One immigrant from Honduras successfully used the program to return home from Chicago. The administration plans to monitor the long-term impact of the policy closely.

Trump’s self-deportation plan represents a controversial immigration innovation. While it promises significant fiscal savings, it raises concerns about legal risks and human rights implications. Still in its early stages, the program’s high initial uptake suggests strong public interest in the offer.
